In the world of figure skating for mens the battle at the Olympics for gold is like moms fighting over a TV on black friday, the tensions are high. But after this morning it is clear who is more likely to win the gold.

Everyone has been on the edge of their seats to see the king of quads, Nathan Chen, and the Goat, Yuzuru Hanyu, battle for gold. But after Yuzuru failed quad salchow this morning in his short program its clear the path to gold has cleared for Nathan.

Adding on the fact that Nathan performed a world record breaking short program, breaking Yuzuru’s record set previously of 111.82, with Nathan’s score being a wapping 113.97 points, Yuzuru’s chance of winning gold seem slim to none. Nathan is a three-time world champion, but only finishing 5th at the 2018 Olympics and this year it seems he will be taking the crown from the reigning king.

“You can never really count out any of these athletes. The competition’s not one program,” Chen said. “Whatever happens in the short program is not indicative of what will happen in the free program.”

Nathan’s score is a good six points ahead of second place, Yuma Kagiyama, and now the only thing left is Thursday’s free skate. The free skate is Yuzuru’s chance to come back to get sliver. Even with the upset for Yuzuru this is still a monumental moment for figure skating history.

“At the last Olympics, both of the short programs didn’t go the way I wanted. To finally get an opportunity to skate the programs I wanted feels really good,” says Chen

If Chen wins gold it will be a new era for figuring with Chen leading the way for the new generation. With Yuzuru having some trouble on the ice it is time for others to shine, but he will forever be one of the greatest figure skaters to step on the ice.

“I feel really shocked,” said Hanyu, adding his skate may have hit a hole in the ice,”but I have one more chance.”

Now all that is left is the free skate in the last run for gold.
