Squid Game is Embarrassingly Overhyped

Squid Game is a very popular Netflix show that was released on September 17th, 2021. The show is directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The cast includes Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, and HoYeon Jung.

The show currently has 1 season and follows a group of poor citizens trying to compete in a contest for 465 billion Won (342,685,377.00 USD). 465 Koreans are stuck in this huge facility as they play life-or-death games and try not to die, as they all are in need of money. However, in the end, one player wins all the money.

One of the (few) good parts of the show is that it keeps you hooked. Since all the players are competing for money, it’s almost implied that viewers should select a character that they want to root for. The show has really good CGI and acting, and the games that the characters play are interesting as well.

However, people have severely overhyped this show.

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to TV is the fans of the show. Sometimes, especially with an extremely popular Netflix show, (Stranger Things is a perfect example of this) fans of TV shows take their obsessions way too far and make the show their entire personality. People took the Squid Game show and never stopped talking about it. Ever. In October 2021, thousands of fans paid $70+ for a Halloween costume, in the hopes of dressing up as a Squid Game character for Halloween. Keep in mind that a lot of these fans are grown adults (which is really weird). One of the biggest critiques of the show is that the wrong contestant won the final prize (personally I agree with these comments). Some of the fans of the show are embarrassing and weird, which is kind of off-putting in my opinion.

Overall, the show was decent, but the fans of the show & the (cringe) amount of people that talked about the show ruined it for me.
