Russia Attacks Europe’s Largest Power Plant

On Friday, March 4th, Russia launched an attack on a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, using cluster bombs.

The Zaporizhzhia power plant was attacked on March 4th. That power plant is the largest in Europe, and it supplies a very large amount of the country’s power. During the Russian invasion on Ukraine, the power plant was attacked by Russian forces.

A senior U.S. Defense Department  official said, “Nuclear power plants are not designed to withstand military attacks, underscoring the recklessness of the assault.”

During the attack, a shootout was happening near the building. Live footage saw bullets flying by on the screen. In the background of the footage, a fire was engulfing one of the reactor buildings. There was serious tension, because if the reactor were to break, there would have been a major disaster.

Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said in a tweet, “If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl!”

What was the attack orchestrated with? Many say that Russia was using cluster bombs. Russia has been using multiple weapons that are internationally banned. These weapons are extremely dangerous and show how extreme Russia is during their invasion.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, “This is brutality. This is inhumane.”

The outcome of this war is unclear, but the fight rages on.
